Botanical Garden Black Walnut

This American Black Walnut tree (Juglans nigra) grew for at least 40 years on the grounds of the Yale Marsh Botanical Gardens at 227 Mansfield Street. The tree was removed in 2010 to increase sunlight to the greenhouses. To our knowledge this was the only black walnut tree growing on Yale campus.  The heartwood is a beautiful deep chocolate brown.
